The UK College of Medicine seeks a visionary chair with a successful record of achievement in academic medicine in obstetrics and gynecology. Exceptional accomplishments as a clinician and academician are required as the chair's duties will include a clinical practice as well as ongoing research and academic activities.

The predominant criteria for appointment as chair include the proven ability to deliver excellent patient care while training future leaders in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, the successful candidate will be a nationally-prominent academic leader and role model with an established record of excellence in clinical care, research, clinical education, and mentorship.

The successful candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills as a listener, decision-maker, humanist and be an effective advocate for the department, its divisions, and its faculty. Scope of Role

The chair of obstetrics and gynecology will make vital contributions to implementing the organization's most critical strategies and will strive to achieve excellence in a full range of quality measurements. The chair will serve as a liaison between the department and the enterprise, reporting directly to the dean of the College of Medicine and the executive vice president for health affairs. They will be directly involved with strategic planning, service development, market development, and outreach. Planning for future growth and recruitment to accomplish department goals will be integral to the duties of chair of obstetrics and gynecology.

Specific Responsibilities:

As a position of oversight, the chair of obstetrics and gynecology will ensure that department faculty collaborate within the department and across the college and campus, sharing research resources whenever possible. This will also include administrative, laboratory, and mentoring support. The chair will work closely to maximize the net yield of each project and avoid segregation or duplication of work in multiple isolated units.

Clinical Care

In conjunction with the medical directors, the chair of obstetrics and gynecology will be responsible for directing provider assignments and coverage of clinical needs. The position will also address budget priorities within the various units, including recruitment priorities and outreach decisions. This individual will coordinate with the leadership of ambulatory clinics, surgical departments, and procedural units.

The chair will review the overall departmental budgets and actively participate in the annual enterprise budget meeting.

The department of obstetrics and gynecology has approximately 45 faculty, (6 PhDs), 25 advanced practice providers, 20 residents, and 8 fellows as of fall 2022. The department is currently led by Chair Dr. Wendy Hansen, who is stepping down as chair after 12 years. She is supported by an administrative leadership team of division chiefs. The department is a medium-sized academic OBGYN Department with strong clinical, educational, and research programs that continue to grow and expand.

Educational programs include an ACGME residency program (5 each year; a total of 20) with continuing accreditation. Both the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship and the Gynecology Oncology Fellowship programs have continued ACGME accreditation. The department has recently led a major change in the third-year medical student obstetrics and gynecology clerkship to improve the student experience.

There are five 4th-year medical student electives.

The department has an established clinical presence in our primary, secondary, and tertiary markets. Currently, the department as a whole will generate over 235,000 wRVU's for FY22 and produce

$44,000,000 in patient charges. Eight divisions contribute to departmental clinical services, including community OB/GYN practices located at Georgetown and Morehead, Kentucky, and robust outreach and telehealth programs across Kentucky. Currently, there are over 100 half-day telehealth clinics per month at 12 sites.

The vision/strategy for OB/GYN is to expand deliveries in the Lexington market from 2000 per year (2021) to over 3200 per year-by-year 2031. This will expand our market share from (29%) to (47%) within the Lexington area. The overall strategy to accomplish this growth will be to build and develop a new facility for low-risk deliveries in the Hamburg area. The new L&D is expected to grow to 1200 low- risk deliveries per year by 2031, with an additional 2000 at UK Healthcare's main campus site. A new Women's Center for Ambulatory growth is planned for the Hamburg site that will provide space for the Department to combine several different clinics into one site for patient convenience. In total, including delivery sites at Morehead and Georgetown, OB will exceed 4,000 deliveries by 2031.

Since 2014, the OB/GYN ambulatory visits have seen remarkable growth. In 2014, the department saw 51,000 ambulatory visits and by 2021 this has grown to approximately 95,000 visits per year.

In addition, our gynecologic oncology ambulatory services are located in the Markey Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated cancer center in the state. In the next five years, plans are underway to construct and open a new, fully-integrated ambulatory cancer building adjacent to UK HealthCare’s Pavilion A.

GYN procedures have increased over 17% when compared to FY2022. This increase is being driven by several new faculty recruits in the first quarter of FY2023 as well as establishing a new division within the Department for Urogynecology. Steady growth is projected for GYN surgery at UK HealthCare over the next 2-3 years with plans for increasing outreach across Eastern Kentucky for GYN Oncology and Urogynecology. Eastern Kentucky has the highest rates of cancer and globally poor health in the nation and access for these patients is a major issue. To bridge this gap plans are underway to create 10-12 outreach sites across Eastern Kentucky to partner with local hospitals and FQHC’s. All surgeries will be performed at UKHC and patients will receive follow-up care in local areas.

Research Division

The Department has an outstanding research program with a strong focus in Cancer, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Women's Health. For example, the Department has a Research Division with six PhD faculty whose research interests cover a range of topics from basic science exploring ovarian function, to the impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on female fertility, to epidemiological based studies in the field of violence against women and its prevention. These six PhD faculty have five NIH grants, a CDC grant, and an Office of Secretary for Health grant as PIs that total over $15,000,000. There are also three additional extramural grants that are pending. Furthermore, the longstanding Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) grant was just renewed for an additional five years, which will continue to foster research and career development opportunities for junior faculty engaged

in women’s health research.

In addition to these extramurally supported projects, there are numerous other research opportunities available to the students, residents, fellows, and faculty in the Department. For example, the Center for

Research on Violence against Women (CRVAW) was created in 2003. At the time, no such model, focused on research, existed anywhere across the country. The idea for this novel academic research center arose from a partnership between the Governor of Kentucky and the UK President, which resulted in the creation of a center that would facilitate the transfer of research to practice. The CRVAW has five endowed faculty across the UK campus. One of those Chairs, Dr. Ann Coker, is a member of the Department of OB/GYN. The CRVAW has expanded the research opportunities for the Department and provided exceptional opportunities to advance our understanding of the health implications of violence and approaches to prevent these forms of violence and/or mitigate the health effect of violence.

Dr. Coker also oversees the Wellness, Health & You (WHY) registry within the NIH Center for Clinical and Translational Science, which is an epidemiology-based platform. This program was created in 2005 to address the dearth of research focused on improving women's health across Kentucky. Over 17,000 women across Kentucky were recruited into this registry. In 2019, WHY was broadened to invite a more diverse membership, specifically targeted towards addressing sex and gender influences on health. WHY now invites all adults between ages 18-89 to join to understand how risk and protective behavioral factors may differentially affect gender and sex differences in health.

Thus, the Department not only has an active, extramurally funded research portfolio encompassing basic, translational, and epidemiologic programs, but also numerous other opportunities to address Women's Health.

Maternal Fetal Medicine

The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine is dedicated to the care of women with high risk pregnancies; research and clinical dissemination of clinical systems to improve care; and education of fellows, residents and medical students. The Division has established programs to provide pregnant women and health care providers throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky unique opportunities to obtain access to our specialized services. The division is comprised of four full-time and three part-time faculty physicians, three MFM fellows, five advance practice providers, a genetics counselor, and three clinical research nurses. We are actively recruiting for 2 new MFM faculty.

Patient care programs include: 1) Ambulatory Ultrasound and Clinic operations at Good Samaritan, 2) the Kentucky Angels telehealth program, 3) the Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic at the UK Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center, 4) the PATHways substance use treatment program at the UK Birthing Center in Chandler Medical Center. Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists coordinate with Neonatologists to provide the most advanced care in the prevention and management of women at risk for preterm birth and those with malformations. Our division provides telemedicine services to 12 sites around Central and Eastern Ky through the Angels program. The program continues to grow, providing high risk pregnancy care closer to home. The Pathways program is especially designed to bring multispecialty services to pregnant women who require assistance for opioid use and other substances. Our goal is to provide an effective, transdisciplinary team to focus on each patient. Our High-Risk OB clinics provide specialized care in prenatal diagnosis such as ultrasound and genetic testing, and both consultative and ambulatory primary management of maternal medical complications. The UK Birthing Center is the leading facility in Central Kentucky specializing in high-risk pregnancies and deliveries with the region’s only Level IV nursery.

The Division currently has $5,900,000 in extramural grant funding. PCORI grant funding is used to support the PATHway and PATHhome programs for opioid addicted mothers and their unborn children across the state. This funding along with state grant programs supports counselors and research staff.

The MFM fellowship was founded in 2008 and is ACGME accredited with a complement of three fellows and assists with research in this area and other foci of the Division.

Division members are equally involved in Quality and Safety Initiates for the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center and recently began an ambulatory US prenatal care Quality and Safety program to protocolize care and reduce unnecessary variation. In addition, the Division faculty and staff participate and provide leadership to the Kentucky Perinatal Quality Collaborative

Gynecology Oncology

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has a tripartite mission of patient care, education, and cancer research. The Division has several nationally renowned faculty, including six full-time gynecologic oncologists, a professor-emeritus, two full-time Ph.D. researchers, and two advanced practice clinicians. The Division is located in the Markey Cancer Center, the only NCI-designated center in Kentucky, but also oversees outreach clinics in Hazard, Middlesboro, Prestonsburg, and Bowling Green, Kentucky. Each year, divisional faculty manage 5,800 ambulatory visits and 900 inpatient admissions. In addition, the Division performs more than 1,000 surgical procedures each year and prescribes more than 1,500 cycles of infusion therapy, making it among the busiest in the country. Founded in 1978, the Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program is one of the nation's longest-standing training programs. The Program is fully-accredited with a complement of five fellows each year (two research and three clinical). In addition, every other year, one research fellow participates in a two-year intensive NCI-designated T-32 Surgical Scientist Training grant, resulting in a Ph.D. degree. Fellow research and presentations have won several national awards in recent years. The Division also has an innovative basic science laboratory and a robust clinical trial infrastructure focusing on ovarian cancer screening, preoperative ovarian tumor evaluation, innovative drug development, drug resistance mechanisms, and targeted therapy based on cancer genomics. The Division is a participating member of the NRG (National Cancer Institute- sponsored Cooperative Group Clinical Trials Network). The University of Kentucky Ovarian Cancer Screening Program (OCSP) has offered free screening to women in Kentucky for 35 years. As a result, the OCSP has identified over 125 ovarian malignancies. In addition, OCSP expertise has resulted in over 60 peer-reviewed publications on ultrasound techniques and ovarian cancer screening.

General Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology is staffed by 10 clinical faculty and 3 APPs. The division has a very busy clinical program in comprehensive women's health, maternity and gynecologic care. Our core clinical program provides clinical experience to residents and medical students who are integral partners in the care of our patients. The division is also responsible for the resident continuity of clinical care experience at Polk Dalton Community Health Center. Additionally, we are involved in initiatives to grow the primary market footprint with participation in new UKHealthcare primary care centers to improve clinical access. We are in the process of developing a nurse practitioner fellowship in women's health and recruiting additional faculty to enable this growth. We have a very busy clinical program with active participation and leadership of our low risk maternity and gynecology services. Our clinical faculty have diverse interest with areas of clinical focus including pediatric and adolescent

gynecology, midlife and vulvar health, surgical and minimally invasive gynecology, cervical cancer screening, pelvic imaging, family planning, and transgender care. The division includes several faculty members who have major roles within the College of Medicine and UKHealthcare including associate dean of admissions, chair of admissions committee, residency program and associate residency program director, clerkship director, ambulatory medical director for department and IT medical director for ambulatory clinical practice.

Gynecologic Subspecialties

Gynecologic Subspecialties is a growing area within the department of obstetrics and gynecology and is committed to caring for women with complex, benign gynecologic disease. In September 2022, Gynecologic Subspecialties branched into two primary focuses – minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS) and female pelvic reconstructive surgery (FPMRS, or urogynecology).

Patient care is provided primarily at the Good Samaritan Medical Office Building, and most of the surgeries are performed at Good Samaritan Hospital. Patients are also treated at Chandler Hospital and the Lexington VA hospital (MIGS only). Patients are referred to our providers from practices throughout the commonwealth and beyond, as our surgeons are the only fellowship-trained MIGS surgeon and urogynecologist in Central Kentucky. Our specialty programs are known throughout the region, with patients traveling from throughout Kentucky and even out of state for care at our multidisciplinary programs. Our Fibroid Treatment Program, a partnership with Interventional Radiology, is a unique clinical program, recognized nationally for our patient-centered approach to managing fibroid-related symptoms. The Endometriosis Program is a collaborative effort with colorectal surgery, radiology and urology in managing patients with endometriosis. Our urogynecology program cares for patients with complex pelvic floor disorders, and our surgeon often works closely with colorectal surgery in managing difficult pelvic floor disorders and fistulas. Division faculty are also involved nationally in their respective specialty and subspecialty societies, and work done by students, residents and faculty is frequently presented at national meetings. Though no members of the division have funded research support, numerous peer-reviewed journal articles have been published in major journals by members of the division. Our division is actively involved in teaching and mentoring residents and medical students in clinic, in the operating room, as well as lectures, and residents from our program have matched into urogynecology and MIGS fellowships in recent years.

Academic Laborists

The Laborist Division is the newest division within the department and was created in July of 2021. We currently have three faculty and one APP and are actively searching for a fourth faculty member to complete our division. The division was born out of the culture of quality and safety to ensure that our patients are receiving the best possible care. Our clinical goal is to have a laborist working each shift and our shifts are in twelve-hour increments as we expect our faculty to be up and alert for our residents and students. The laborists work solely inpatient on labor and delivery and are the leaders of the unit.

We direct the flow of patient care on the unit and are responsible for all obstetric triage. The laborist generally manages the deliveries of the high-risk service, managing resident patients and drop in patients as well as the primary back up for our midwife group. Our faculty are active members on the Labor and Delivery Quality and Safety committee and help to lead initiatives like our postpartum hemorrhage task force and a current faculty serves as the medical director for the PAV HA floor 3

Women's Care. Our faculty orchestrate and organize multidisciplinary obstetric simulations in conjunction with our nursing leadership. The laborist division is also responsible for both resident and medical student teaching on Labor and Delivery and serve on both resident and fellowship clinical competency committees

Georgetown Women's Health

The Division of UK Women's Health – Georgetown at the University of Kentucky Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is located in Georgetown, Kentucky, which is only a short 20-minute drive from the main UK campus. Sitting in the heart of Horse Country in Scott County, Georgetown is the 6th largest city by population and the 2nd fasting growing in Kentucky, significantly attributed to by the presence of Toyota manufacturing, employing over 10,000 workers. For nearly a decade, UK has committed to establishing a thriving, community-essential women's services division in this area, partnering with Georgetown Community Hospital, owned by LifePoint Health, to provide all Labor and Delivery services, as well as Emergency Department coverage and both inpatient and outpatient gynecologic surgery. This division is comprised of 2 OBGYN faculty members and 2 APPs who provide this community with comprehensive, general OBGYN services, including evaluation and treatment of the following: complete obstetrical care - prenatal & delivery, contraceptive care and family planning, annual well-woman care with an emphasis on preventative medicine, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery - including hysteroscopy with endometrial ablation and laparoscopy for endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or other abnormalities, major gynecologic surgery - including hysterectomy via vaginal, laparoscopic, or open techniques, pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence, infertility, gynecologic cancer screening, osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy, PCOS, menstrual abnormalities, and many others. Our office offers on-site ultrasound and laboratory capabilities, along with antepartum testing. Additionally, this division actively participates in training both OBGYN residents and UK College of Medicine students who rotate in both ambulatory and hospital settings. UK Women's Health - Georgetown is steadily growing and is partnering with the hospital on plans to build a new birthing center in the near future.

Morehead Women's Health

The Morehead Division is a unique extension of UK Ob/Gyn into the eastern Kentucky community. An interdisciplinary group of APRNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, and up to four faculty physicians provides a thriving full spectrum practice in general obstetrics and gynecology. The outpatient clinic is purely UK HealthCare and serves a much needed role in the community through colposcopy, complex gynecology consultations, and LARC placement. The office is equipped with UK Ob/Gyn ultrasound and Telehealth for Maternal Fetal Medicine consultations. Our physicians partner with St. Claire Healthcare – the local inpatient facility – to perform 24-hour coverage for deliveries, obstetrical triages, ED consultations, and gynecologic surgeries. This 159-bed hospital is the major employer in the county and is an essential access center for more rural areas of eastern Kentucky. Morehead is also one of the three regional campuses for the UK College of Medicine – educating 24 students in the clinical years. St. Claire Healthcare collaborates with UK to host a complete Family Medicine Residency and select rural rotations for Internal Medicine and General Surgery. Our presence in medical education is paramount at this location.

Midwife Division

Midwife Division is dedicated to caring for women with low-risk pregnancies who desire a midwifery model of care. Celebrating their 5th year, they have experienced enormous growth and this past year added their sixth midwife. They are integrated into the Department working side by side with the obstetric team. They are key to the education of midwife students, PGY1,2 residents, and our UK medical students. They are also involved with quality and safety projects. They enjoy a strong community presence.


Established in 1960, the College of Medicine produces highly qualified, caring physicians and biomedical scientists to serve the people of Kentucky and the nation. In 2021, the college tallied 718 medical students among its main campus and three regional campuses, along with 807 ACGME-accredited program residents and fellows, and 300 graduate students. It is one of six health-related colleges at the University (Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health), encompassing a combined 25 basic science and clinical departments and more than 1,100 full-time faculty members.

In the past two years, the college has expanded its educational and research efforts, adding two new regional campuses in Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky with educational opportunities that complement those offered at the main campus in Lexington. The college also has a campus in

Morehead, a component of its effort to address the Commonwealth’s physician shortage by offering

third- and fourth-year medical students a curriculum that emphasizes rural medicine.

In recent years the College of Medicine has put a heavy focus on research. In fiscal year 2021, the

college’s research funding totaled more than $232.7 million, with its National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding doubling since fiscal year 2017. This has allowed, and will continue to allow, UK researchers to dedicate more time and resources to alleviate the health issues Kentuckians face.


Charles H. “Chipper” Griffith, III, MD, MSPH, leads the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as acting dean following a long, honorable career as a champion for medical education in the Commonwealth. His career of advancing education, providing exceptional clinical care, and conducting transformative research at the University of Kentucky spans more than three decades.

Along with serving as acting dean, Dr. Griffith is vice dean for education, overseeing all aspects of the college’s educational programs and initiatives, as well as a professor of medicine and pediatrics. Dr. Griffith’s passion for teaching and commitment to patient care is leading the College of Medicine into the next phase of medical education.

Dr. Griffith holds more teaching honors than any faculty member in the history of the College of Medicine, including the Alpha Omega Alpha/ Association of American Medical Colleges Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award (2004), which is the most highly regarded medical school teaching award in the country. In 2006, the Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine national organization honored him by renaming its educational research award the Charles H. Griffith Educational Research Award.

Dr. Griffith has published multiple articles and served on numerous national committees including the Alpha Omega Alpha Board of Directors (the national medical honor society) and numerous committees for the National Board of Medical Examiners, including the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 2 Committee.

He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine followed by a residency at the University of Kentucky, where he also earned his Master of Science in Public Health.
